There is an excellent chance that in your next job you will work with databases containing data on customers, products, transactions, costs, inventories, and more.  You might even be asked to participate in a team that organizes that information, or accesses it to produce better reports and decision outcomes.  As you progress in your career, you might even find yourself in charge of evaluating investment opportunities that involve data technologies.

This class is designed to make you feel confident in your understanding of these digital technologies as a team member, consultant, and future manager.


In the first part of the course you will learn how to store, search, and modify business data that reside in remote databases. You will be able to

  • search and modify data in relational databases using SQL
  • integrate information across different sources
  • design simple databases
  • create relational tables and views
  • use tools that partly automate database design.

Next, you you will learn tools and techniques to produce reports, simple analytics, and visualizations.  You will

  • create BI reports and visualizations with SQL, EXCEL, and Power BI 
  • design a data warehouse using MySQL
  • create and use a simple Data Warehouse
  • create and use Pivot tables.

The third and last part of the course will focus on the management of data technologies. You will acquire foundational literacy and an ability to discuss broad topics in the management of data that will help you in interviews and in your first job. Example topics include:

  • Data quality
  • Data security
  • Data privacy
  • Blockchain as a database technology
  • Data monetization.
