Digital data are an asset: they have value. They are expensive to produce, store, and maintain. They can be bought or sold. They are so critical to delivering services and making decisions that is hard to imagine how a Commerce graduate could start a successful career without an understanding of data technologies, or without mastering digital technology skills. Firms seek to hire individuals who know how to work with these technologies: individuals who can contribute to their management, designing, and auditing.

COMM - 3220 Data Management for Decision Making covers many of the foundational skills that are needed to to be successful in our technology-infused business world.

As a result of this course, this is what you may list on your CV:

  • Data modeling skills: analyzing and structuring business information to be stored in databases
Tools: ERD diagramming, Draw IO,  MySQL Workbench
  • Database skills: searching, storing, and modifying business data
Tools: SQL, Microsoft Azure Data Studio, Microsoft SQL Server
  • Business intelligence skills: analytics, dashboards and visualizations
Tools: Microsoft Power Query, Power Pivot, and Power BI.
