WINIT (What Is New In Technology)

Purpose, Task, and Criteria

Aplus

Purpose

Knowing what is going on at the intersection between accounting and technology is important for your career. Also important is being able to explain ideas clearly to your peers and managers. WINIT gives you an opportunity to keep up to date, as well as to practice your skill at presenting/explaining technical topics.

Task

Every time we meet, a volunteer selected during the previous class will guide a discussion about a recent newspaper article or short video. Pick a recent video or an article about information technology advances that you believe will be of interest to the class and therefore will spark a lively conversation.   Ideally, the content is (a) recent and innovative (b) interesting, and (c) deals with an accounting/finance issue.  Examples: fin-tech companies, fraud detection technology, crypto currencies, AI in business,  data monetization, business analytics, careers in data... the list goes on and on.
Consult the technology section of a major newspaper or publication for inspiration. Do some research on the topic. Prepare a 3-4 minute verbal presentation and/or show a video.  No slides or supporting materials are required. However, you should be able to explain clearly to the class what you have read and why it is important.  The goal is to spark a conversation in class.  You might optionally have a couple of broad questions for your audience to start it.

If you want to show a video, let me know at the beginning of the class so that I can set it up.

Criteria

WINIT counts as class participation extra credit. You will be evaluated based on the content  (is it recent? interesting? does it deals with an accounting/finance issue?) as well as your ability to spark a conversation in class.
